January
|
This is usually the coldest month of the year and the protection of bonsai is the most important activity. Protect your most delicate bonsais in an ice and wind proof place, or use the space underneath the platform where they are for this purpose by extending a plastic above. Make sure the soil does not dry in sheltered trees, you should keep it moist.
Start planning the approaching spring, and buy the necessary materials for the time of repotting, such as peat, pots and sand.
This season is, in my opinion, ideal for looking plants in nurseries. Because hardwoods are in their rest period is easier to evaluate the potential they have for bonsai (nebari, trunk, branches, etc.)..

February
|
If you want to sow seeds in spring, this is the best month to order and begin the process of stratification.
In this month begins the time of repotting. From the third week of the month is safe to start this task so expected. However, it is necessary to protect the newly potted bonsai from frost and wind. Finally, trees that have grown in larger pots are placed in pots of bonsai that highlight its value, previously "overshadowed" by an ugly pot.
This is also the ideal month to prune deciduous bonsai. Once they are in their resting period will not pour sap and healing will be done quickly in the growing season that approaches. Do not forget to seal the cut areas with cut healing paste.
|
March
|
March is the month when temperatures begin to rise and announce the spring. The bonsai that give flower in late winter will be at this point in its splendor.
The repotting and structure pruning may continue until mid-month, and this is also the time to look for trees in nature.
March is the best month to make sowings. After completion of the process of stratification sow the seeds in trays and house them in the space freed by bonsai that were protected in the winter and that must now be placed outdoors.
Is desirable to apply a fungicide and an insecticide in bonsai to eliminate threats that survived the winter.

April
|
The Bonsai that were not repotted this year should be fertilized from this month. Start by applying more diluted doses every two weeks gradually increasing the concentration. Never forget that it is always best to apply fertilizer in lower concentrations than otherwise. Please note that in spring the most important nutrient is nitrogen for the growing of leaves.
This is the best time to propagate evergreens through hardwood cuttings, and seeds can also be sown this month.
April is usually the month of Easter, when extra cleanings and paintings are done. Extend these tasks to bonsai, treating the platform, cleaning and painting the greenhouse, etc..
|
May
|
The bonsai should be in this month with new foliage showing renewed vigor. Prune the long shoots to promote the formation of dense branches. The bonsai that were repotted this year and were protected can now be brought into the open air because there is no longer risk of frost.
Check carefully for harmful insects on new branches and at the below surface of leaves. If you find pests which justify the application of insecticide, do not hesitate, and use it before its too late. Pay attention to recommended doses and concentrations, in doubt use less.
From the middle of the month you can do the air layering of trees that can be reproduced using this method.
|
June
|
It is in the month of June that comes the summer, so this month the days are longer. The most important task from now is watering. It is essential to water the bonsai in the evening, and may even be necessary to perform an additional watering in the morning.
Continue to feed the bonsai following the plan started in April. From here you should also begin to fertilize trees that were repotted this year. Interpose organic manure in inorganic fertilizer applications.
As for propagation, continue with the air layers, and make softwood cuttings this month. The new plants that grew from seeds this year must now have a few pairs of leaves and is therefore the time to transplant for small pots in order to continue to grow strongly.
Stay tuned to the appearance of pests in bonsai, acting immediately.
Trees grow quickly at this time of year and you should continue to prune the long shoots to keep the bonsai in shape.
|
July
|
Wattering remains the most important activity in this period. It's a good idea to protect the trees with tenderleaves providing them with shade during the hottest hours of the day (usually between 11H and 16H).
Continue to prune the shoots to keep the bonsai in shape.
Keep an eye out for possible pests and continue feeding bonsai.
Make sure the air layering already have enough roots to be able to be separated from the parent plant. If so, plant them in a large pot and shelter it from wind and direct sunlight at first weeks.
|
August
|
What was said on watering for the previous month, it is equally valid for August. Stay aware of temperatures and watering needs. On really hot days you may need to water twice a day.
Starting this month you should just use a fertiliser with less nitrogen and more potassium and phosphorus to strengthen the wood and prepare the buds for next year.
Check in the various bonsai if the wire did not begin to mark the bark.
Keep aware of insect pests that in warmer days multiply rapidly.
|
September
|
In September comes the Autumn and the feed supplies decrease. Apply although with less regularity fertilizer low of Nitrogen.
This is a good month to make hardwood cuttings.
Starting this month is no longer safe to repot plants reproduced in this year. Trees obtained from seeds, cuttings and air layering should wait for next spring.
Stay tuned to the wire as the branches thicken quite this month.
|
October
|
Along with April and May, this is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful months of the year. The colors of the hardwoods are spectacular this month when they prepare to fall. The garden is filled with warm colors like oranges, yellows and reds. If you reduced the level of Nitrogen in the previous months you will be delighted with the appearance of your deciduous bonsai at this time.
Feeding should be suspended from this month and will only be resumed the following spring.
The pines should be pruned at this time, when the sap is no longer rising so quickly.
|
November
|
The deciduous are still full of color this month, but soon they start to get naked.
There is not much to do this month just keep the garden and the greenhouse clean of falling leaves.
|
December
|
Winter starts this month and the sensitive bonsai should be protected from now.
This is the lethargic period before a new growing season.
